Oerlemans Plastics’ quarter-loaf packaging prevents wastage of bread

Publication date: July 25, 2012

Reducing wastage of bread results in significant savings on the amount of packaging material used.

This new packaging is the result of an innovative large-scale, subsidized project to prevent food wastage. The catalyst for this initiative was the fact that 49.5 million kilograms of bread are produced annually in the Netherlands, but not all of it is eaten. The focus of this project was not to develop a better, lighter, or different type of bag, but to reduce this wastage of bread. The outcome: the quarter-loaf. Four quarter-loaves require more packaging than a full size loaf of bread, but the anticipated reduction of the considerable wastage of bread will lead to significant savings on the amount of packaging material used.
