KIDV Recycle Check
The KIDV Recycle Checks help companies assess the recyclability of packaging. This looks at the current situation in the Netherlands in terms of sorting and recycling. There are Recyclechecks for packaging made of flexible and rigid plastic, glass, metal and paper and cardboard. They have been issued since 2018 and are updated annually when necessary, in response to developments in the packaging chain.
The KIDV Recycle Checks apply to packaging that ends up in household waste or similar waste streams, such as waste from catering, offices, shops and service companies. The KIDV Recycle Checks can also be applied to packaging collected through a deposit system.
Users are asked a concise number of questions about the material and packaging components that affect sorting and recycling. For each question, additional information is provided in the background document. At the end, the answer rolls out: the packaging is optimal, reasonable, limited or non-recyclable.
Legislation
Where possible, the Recycle Check and its accompanying documents take into account current European and national legislation in force at the time of publication. The new packaging regulation, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is expected to be published in early 2025. See also our frequently asked questions around the PPWR on KIDV website. More information on the PPWR can also be found on Verpact's website.
If you place packaging on the Dutch market, it must meet the so-called Essential Requirements (for more information on this go to Essentiële Eisen - website only available in Dutch). These essential requirements are criteria that stem from the European Directive on Packaging and that have formed part of the Packaging Decree (Besluit Beheer Verpakkingen) since 2006. These Essential Requirements stipulate that the environmental impact of a packaging must be minimal. This is laid down in a product dossier, which must also contain a substantiation of material recovery. The KIDV Recycle Check answers some of the questions in the corresponding standard. Use the results of the Recycle Check, as well as the associated specifications and other substantiation, and add these to the product dossier.
The PPWR will ask to provide this same type of information. By working on it in advance, you'll make it easier for your packaging to comply with current legislation and be prepared for future legislation.
Fee modulation (plastics)
If packaging is judged as ‘optimal’ in the Recycle Check for both rigid and flexible plastic packaging, companies can apply for fee modulation from Verpact. They will then pay a lower waste management fee. Do you have any questions about fee modulation? If so, please contact Verpact.
