Suiker Unie’s bag of sugar made of light, uncoated paper

Publication date: June 21, 2011
Organisation: Suiker Unie

Suiker Unie conserves 15,000 kg paper by using lighter bags of uncoated paper made of FSC wood fibers. Since glue adheres to it better, less is required than before.

Suiker Unie works according to the so-called essential requirements that apply to packaging in Europe. The focus is on heavy metals and on reducing headspace. Collomoduul’s guidelines offer the most efficient stacking format for their pallets. The old bag of sugar was made of a coated type of paper. It was a logical choice, given the multi-colored graphic packaging design produced by rotogravure printing. The image would not work out well on a background of uncoated paper. Developments in flexographic printing and a new graphic design paved the way for use of a lighter uncoated type of paper. Since glue adheres to it better, less of it is required than before. All in all, the development took one year. Suiker Unie conserves 15,000 kg of paper by using the lighter bags made of FSC wood fibers.
