Bottling wine in the Netherlands in lightweight O-I bottles
Developments in logistics presented opportunities for the wine sector to produce lighter bottles and boxes.
Previously, wines were bottled in the country of origin. On average, the glass bottles weighed around 465 grams or more; 28,000 bottles of 75 cl were shipped per container. Large retailers now prefer to transport their precious wine in big tanks. In this way, they can now transport approximately 40,000 liters of wine at a time in a 40 ft container, instead of 18,750 (75 cl) bottles of wine.
The wine is now bottled in the Netherlands. Bottling locally, coupled with a shorter logistics route, also offered opportunities to produce lighter outer packaging cartons (each holding 6 bottles) and to tailor them to local preferences. There is a choice of corks or lightweight screw tops. These advantages have resulted in a lighter bottle and lower CO2 emissions related to transportation in the Netherlands and, ultimately, more wine occupying the same shelf space. O-I has a number of lightweight 75 cl Bordeaux bottles in its Lean Green™ range, including the 460 g Reference (previously 550 g), the 410 g Caractere (previously 460 g), as well as a 345 g Eco bottle and a 300 g Optima bottle.
