Bisphenol A in packaging

Publication date: May 4, 2022
Organisation: KIDV

Coatings used for plastic and metal packaging may contain the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA). Polycarbonate food containers may also contain BPA, which is used to make the containers transparent or more heat-resistant. BPA can pose a risk to public health. Nevertheless, BPA can be safely used in food contact materials.

The KIDV has drawn up the fact sheet Bisphenol A with background information on the use of BPA in packaging and the requirements that apply.

This fact sheet is part of a series of KIDV fact sheets on food safety, published in May 2022. For more information, see our dossier page on Food Safety
