KIDV publishes first ever Recyclecheck for beverage cartons
Kennisinstituut Duurzaam Verpakken (KIDV, part of Verpact) is proud to introduce the first ever Recyclecheck for beverage cartons. This Recyclecheck is a tool that provides producers and importers with insights into the recyclability of their packaging. This check is now available for beverage cartons and is part of Verpact's programme aimed at improving all aspects of beverage carton recycling; from design to recycling.
Why create this Recyclecheck?
Beverage cartons consist of several materials: cardboard, plastic and sometimes aluminium. This combination of materials requires beverage cartons to be recycled respectively in specialised paper and PolyAl (plastic and aluminium) plants. This Recyclecheck allows producers and importers of packaged products to assess their packaging for recyclability, as they already could for all other packaging materials.

Beverage cartons are moderately recyclable
Currently, the maximum score for beverage cartons is “moderately recyclable”, because less than half the volume of beverage cartons placed on the market in 2023 managed to reach a recycler. Once more than half of the beverage cartons entering the Dutch market reach recyclers and/or PolyAl recycling capacity is increased, the recycling check will be updated. Beverage cartons can then receive the final score “good recyclable”, provided the other conditions in the Recyclecheck are also met.

International first
The KIDV is leading the way internationally with this Recyclecheck. Alongside, for example, the European Design for recyclability guidelines of the Food and Beverage Carton Alliance (FBCA), this is the first Recyclecheck for a specific country.
To arrive at this Recyclecheck, consultations were held, as usual, with beverage carton producers, represented by Hedra and FBCA, sorters, recyclers and users of beverage cartons. The Recycle Check has been approved by the KIDV's Board of Independent Experts.
