Albert Heijn’s dishwasher tablets packaged like sugar cubes

Publication date: February 1, 2011
Organisation: Albert Heijn

By packaging dishwasher tablets the same way as sugar cubes, Albert Heijn no longer needs to pack air. This has resulted in compact, minimalist packaging made of recycled material.

AH has reduced the use of air in the packaging of its puur&eerlijk dishwasher tablets, by packaging the tablets like sugar cubes. To carry the dishwasher tablets under AH’s puur&eerlijk label, not only the product, but also the packaging had to have a demonstrably low environmental footprint. The purchaser of the dishwasher tablets investigated how similar products were packaged and how to eliminate the use of air in packaging. He was inspired by the way sugar cubes are packaged. The result: compact, minimalist packaging made of recycled material. The packaging components can be disposed of separately and are suitable for re-use. The volume of the packaged product is about 40 percent lower compared to that of other providers of this type of product (for the same number of dishwasher tablets).
