Collection, sorting and recycling of packaging

When designing packaging, you can have a lot of influence on its recyclability. We call this design-for-recycling. It is one of the aspects you can consider when you get started with sustainable packaging. To make conscious choices, it helps to understand how packaging is collected, sorted and recycled after use.

Watch the animation video below to get an idea of the different steps within packaging waste disposal in the Netherlands.

Why is good recyclability of packaging important?

A shift is currently taking place from a so-called linear economy to a recycling economy to a circular economy. In a circular economy, ideally there is no more waste: products and materials stay in the cycle. To get there, it is important that packaging be properly recyclable. In a recycling economy, it is often difficult to maximize the quality of recycled materials, which means that a high percentage of new raw materials is still needed in the production of new packaging. We need to avoid that.

By already considering recyclability during the design and production of the packaging, you have a lot of influence on the use of the product, when and how the packaging is discarded and whether this packaging waste can be properly sorted and recycled into new raw materials.

E-learning module Waste disposal and recycling

KIDV has created an e-learning module on waste disposal and recycling. Using concrete practical examples and assignments specifically applicable to your own packaging case, KIDV will guide you through the collection, sorting and recycling of different packaging. The e-learning module deals with each packaging material: rigid and flexible plastic, glass, metal and paper and cardboard.

E-learning module Sorting and recycling processes of plastic packaging

As an in-depth version of the e-learning module "Waste disposal and recycling," KIDV has developed this more technical module. You will learn about the basic techniques used in the sorting and recycling of plastic packaging. For example, you will learn about the influence of packaging design on the various sorting and recycling processes. This e-learning module was made possible by Margot Meijerink (UTwente student) and Attero.
